Close to Innsbruck, in Halltal, we can find many skiable couloirs for some skiing fun on days with safe conditions. One of them is the Gacher Tod from the summit of Wildangerspitze (the “Sudden Death” couloir). It offers some steep skiing close to the city, with easy entry and exit routes through Halltal.

Route:

From the Halltal parking lot, follow the bob track (the valley road in the summer) up a long way for about 750 verticals until the old building called Herrenhäuser. If you bring some change, there is a stash of beers and soft-drinks at the hut. Keep going up the forest road for a few more turns, until signpost leads away from the point of a hairpin turn southwards. This is the summer trail to Törl, which we will also loosely follow.

Continue through the steep bowl to the Törl saddle, where you get great views over Innsbruck and the Inn valley. We continue ascending through the alpine bushes north-west towards the summit of Wildanger (2153m). Once reaching the ridge line, the couloir is easily visible on the north side. There are multiple possible entries so use your judgment to pick the best one.

Descend:

Ski down the steep couloir on the north-east back into Halltal. The couloir eventually opens up. Lean eastwards and find your way through the alpine terrain back to the forest road you ascended earlier. If you keep heading into the valley, you can’t miss it. Once on the road, you can easily follow the bob track back to the parking lot.
