Route:

If you're seeking a serene running route that offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life, yet remains conveniently close to Innsbruck, the Knappensteig trail is an excellent choice. This trail is a must-try for any runner based in or visiting the area.

The journey begins at the Hinterhorn Alm parking lot, situated at the end of an 8km long paid mountain road. This location itself is worth exploring, with the Alm offering a charming slice of alpine life.

From the Hinterhorn Alm parking lot, the route starts towards Walder Alm on a well-marked and frequented trail. This initial stretch serves as a gentle warm-up, allowing you to ease into the run and acclimate to the surroundings. The trail is well-trodden and easy to follow.

As you progress, you'll reach the Knappensteig itself - a narrow, partially exposed trail that descends into the idyllic Vomperloch valley. This section of the route offers a taste of the tranquility and seclusion that makes this trail so special. The path is narrow and can be challenging at times so watch your footing. Once you reach the river bed, the trail continues over the Überschalljoch saddle, leading you to the Hallerangerhaus. Here, you'll be rewarded with beautiful views of the Karwendel region. This is a perfect spot to pause, catch your breath, and take in the stunning panorama of flora, fauna, and mountain peaks.

From the Hallerangerhaus, the route ascends via the "Durchschlag" to the Lafatscherjoch saddle. This climb is challenging, but the sense of accomplishment will make up for it. From here, a cool traverse trail awaits, leading you below the Speckkarspitze with beautiful views of Hall valley all the way to the Bettelwurfhütte. The descent from the Bettelwurfhütte to the Hall valley is technical and requires focus, but the surrounding landscape makes it a joy to navigate. Just before reaching the valley, the trail turns to the left and ascends to the private Alpensöhnehütte. This quaint hut offers a charming place to rest before the final stretch of the run.

The last part of the trail offers beautiful views of the Inn Valley as it leads back to the Hinterhornalm. The trail leads you out to the last curve of the toll road, winding its way back to the parking lot where your journey began.

The Knappensteig running route is more than just a trail; it's an escape, a challenge, and a journey through some of the more remote areas around Innsbruck. So hit the trail, and discover the Knappensteig for yourself.

Tip: recommend stopping for lunch in Bettelwurf hütte with an amazing view.
