Jochgrubenkopf is known as the “avalanche mountain” in the Schmirn Valley. The northern route goes through an area where no trees grow because massive avalanches sweep through every year, destroying anything in their path. This mountain can be dangerous, so the route should only be attempted when conditions are very safe. Despite the risks, it’s a popular tour because you can start climbing steeply right away without a long approach, and the view from the summit is incredible.

Route:

From Kasern, head across the field to the stream, then cross a bridge to the other side, staying left of the avalanche clearing. Zigzag up through the clearing—it’s a bit easier on the right side—until you reach the level of the Seealm. From there, continue into the massive cirque, where the terrain flattens slightly. Depending on the conditions, climb steeply, sticking more to the left or center. At the top, traverse to the right below a rocky barrier and ascend to the summit (you might leave your skis here if necessary).

Descend:

The descent follows the same route as the ascent. If there’s not much snow, you can take the forest road from the Seealm down. Near the bottom, however, you’ll need to cut through the woods at a curve to the right to get back to the parking lot.
