Route:

If you're looking for a running route that combines breathtaking views, challenging terrain, and a touch of adventure, look no further than this trail starting from and ending in Axamer Lizum. This route will take you around the Kalkkögel range along the highest possible route.

Begin your journey at Axamer Lizum, a beautiful spot known for its winter sports but equally enchanting in the warmer months. From here, set your course uphill towards Halsl. The path is well-trodden and easy to follow. As you approach Halsl, turn right to the ridge and start your ascent up to Ampferstein. The climb might be challenging, but the panoramic views from the top are more than worth the effort. Upon reaching Ampferstein, prepare yourself for the technical section of the run. This part of the route takes you across the S/SW side of Kalkkögel. It's the also the coolest part of the whole route.

As you traverse the route, you'll come across the towering Marchreisenspitze. You have two options here: bypass it and continue along the main route, or take a side-trip to the summit. If you have the time and energy, the very technical detour is highly recommended for the unparalleled views it offers. Next, you'll follow the Gsallersteig, a path that runs along the walls of the range. This section of the route offers a unique perspective of the landscape, with the towering walls on one side and the expansive views on the other.

Your next challenge is a short but steep uphill climb to the Alpenklubscharte. This will take you over the pass and to the east side of the range. The descent from the col is through a loose scree field, so take care with your footing here. Once you've navigated the scree field, you'll find yourself on the east side of the range. From here, follow a single track back to Hoadl. This part of the route is a joy to run, with the trail winding its way through the landscape. Finally, from Hoadl, make your way back to the parking lot down the ski slope. It's a tough end to the run getting down the steep grassy slope.

This running route around Kalkkögel is a true gem, offering a mix of challenging terrain, stunning views, and a sense of adventure. A good place to get away from the crowds on a sunny day.
